Oats (Avena sativa) represent a major food source and, due to high nutritional value, are a staple food in a number of countries. Although oats have long been part of the human diet, they are also used as animal feed (e.g., horses, chicken and other livestock), in cosmetics and as a winter cover crop in no-till rotations.

Production        

Oats are typically planted in the spring and early summer in colder areas and then harvested in late summer or early fall.  Globally, Russia is the top oat producer, accounting for more than one-fifth of world production. Other top producers include Canada, Poland, Finland, Australia and the U.S.

Price Drivers

The demand for oats has declined over the years as more focus has been placed on soybeans and corn. Oat prices are influenced by:

  • harvest sizes
  • weather
  • prices of other feed grains (specifically corn)
