WHAT IS Teletax

Teletax is a fully automated phone service from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that offers pre-recorded messages on various tax topics for callers.

BREAKING DOWN Teletax

Teletax covers about 150 different tax-related issues commonly faced by taxpayers, such as who must file, tax credits, retirement accounts and payment arrangements.

In addition to tax information, filers can also use IRS telephone services to order forms, check on the status of their refund, ask questions about tax returns or inquire about a letter or notice . The Teletax number is 1-800-829-1040. Tax forms and instructions for current and prior years are available by calling 1-800-829-3676. Many of these services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Teletax also provides filers with automatic information about their refund status. An update is usually available for a taxpayer approximately four to five weeks after filing. The Teletax system allows callers to access various topics by typing in a three-digit code. All Teletax topics are also available to be viewed online at www.irs.gov.

Other Free Tax Services

In addition to Teletax, the IRS also offers free tax help by computer and in person. Taxpayers can access a wealth of free tax information on www.irs.gov, including 1040 Central, a special section of the IRS website that has all the information taxpayers need to prepare and file their returns. Through the IRS site, taxpayers can access forms and instructions, and find answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs). Taxpayers may also check their refund status using IRS.gov's “Where's My Refund?” tool. To utilize the “Where’s My Refund” tool, a taxpayer needs to provide their Social Security Number, filing status including if they will file as married or single, and the amount of refund shown on the previous year’s return. Once this information is submitted, the taxpayer will be able to view the status of their refund payment, as well as instructions to resolve refund-related problems.

Free in-person tax preparation is also available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program. To learn more about these services in a particular area, taxpayers can call 1-800-829-1040 for more information. Taxpayers may also call AARP, the largest TCE participant, at 1-888-227-7669 to find the most convenient location.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are also a source of personal tax help. IRS representatives in these offices can assist with inquiries, adjustments, letters and notices as well as payment plans for those owing more taxes than they can afford.
