DEFINITION of NMF

While NMF can have many meanings, it is often used as an abbreviation for "no meaningful figure." It's used in an accounting context when examining the financial data of a firm or comparing financial data between firms. You'll often see this when comparing financial data among companies where a certain ratio or figure isn't applicable to the company.

BREAKING DOWN NMF

When analyzing a company, there are many metrics and ratios you can use. These metrics and ratios have different numerators and denominators. For example, if a company has negative earnings, it cannot have a P/E ratio. Earnings are in the denominator, and you can't divide by zero. The P/E ratio for a company with negative earnings might be replaced with "NMF." When analyzing companies across an industry, it might be a good idea to choose a ratio for which all of the companies you are examining have meaningful figures.

Instead of NMF, at times you might see NM, which means "not meaningful."
