American Council Of Life Insurance

The American Council Of Life Insurance is an association of American life insurance carriers based in Washington D.C. The American Council of Life Insurance deals with legislation on all levels of government that pertains to the treatment of life insurance. The council also promotes the life insurance industry to the public through various means of advertising and communication.

The American Council Of Life Insurance (ACLI) council acts as a spigot for the stream of information pertaining to life insurance that reaches the public. Both stock and mutual life carriers are members of the council as it has a full understanding of the industry and the array of available products.

The ACLI advocates on behalf of approximately 290 member companies located across the country, which are dedicated to providing products and services that contribute to consumers’ financial and retirement security. ACLI members represent 95 percent of industry assets, 93 percent of life insurance premiums, and 98 percent of annuity considerations in the United States. Seventy-five million families depend on our members' life insurance, annuities, retirement plans, long-term care insurance, disability income insurance and reinsurance products. Taking into account additional products, including dental, vision and other supplemental benefits, ACLI members provide financial protection to 90 million American families. 

The American Council of Life Insurers named Susan Neely as president and CEO of the ACLI in May, 2018. She was formerly president and CEO of the American Beverage Association (ABA).

As president and CEO of ABA, Neely served as the policy and public education advocate for the non-alcoholic beverage industry for the previous 13 years. Prior to that role, she served as assistant secretary for public affairs for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2003-2005 and served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush between 2001-2002, where she was one of the architects of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Neely has also served in several senior government and public affairs roles during her career, including at the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Health Insurance Association of America, where she created and oversaw a variety of national, award-winning advocacy programs and initiatives. She succeeds Governor Dirk Kempthorne, who was appointed president and CEO of ACLI in November 2010 after a career in public service as both a governor and senator. Neely is joined by 10 committee members to form the APLI Board of Directors.
