Associate In Claims (AIC)

An Associate in Claims is a professional designation for professionals with enhanced skill training to handle different types of claims. Areas of study in the Associate in Claims (AIC) program include: claim handling principles, managing bodily injury claims, property loss adjusting and liability claim practices. The program is typically geared towards professional working in the insurance industry.

The Associate in Claims program is commonly used by many companies to train their professionals in claims handling. To obtain the AIC designation, the candidate has to complete the program and pass the exam administered by the Insurance Institute of America (IIA). The AIC program itself consists of a series of 13-week courses with four national exams and is most appropriate for experienced adjusters, claims supervisors, and examiners. The program was developed with the technical and financial assistance of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters (NAIIA).

The AIC program is a self-study program. A prospective AIC designee may order traditional textbooks or view educational materials online. Final exams are administered at various locations around the U.S., and occasionally internationally. The exams are two hours long and students are asked to answer 85 objective questions. 

Both the educational materials and the exams taken at the end of the courses cost a fee. The total cost of each course is under a couple hundred dollars. The completion of each individual course earns the student a smaller designation, but the AIC is earned after the completion of all six courses. 

The Associate in Claims designation is a nationally recognized certification in the insurance industry. Obtaining an AIC designation demonstrates a commitment to the profession and continuing education, and it can be a great asset when it comes to securing a job in the field. If someone is already working in the insurance industry as an independent insurance adjuster, a staff claims representative, an examiner, a public adjuster, or anyone else looking to move up in the insurance industry, the AIC certification may also help.
