Choosing between these two comes down to personal preference, and perhaps the geographic availability of one of their offices. Both have excellent fundamental research offerings and over 200 commission-free exchange-traded funds. Their commission structures are nearly identical. Schwab clients can trade futures and futures options while Fidelity's customers have greater access to international equities, derivatives, and currencies. Short sellers may find more opportunities with Fidelity.

Fidelity lets you open an account for free, though an unfunded account will not have access to most of the research functions after 30 days. Schwab lets you open an account without funding it also, but there's a catch: clients must also open a free, no minimum High Yield Investor Checking account linked to the Schwab One brokerage account. Without the link there is a $100 minimum with a $100/month direct deposit or $1,000 minimum for the Schwab One brokerage account.

Methodology

Investopedia’s mission is to provide investors with unbiased, comprehensive reviews and ratings of online brokers. Our reviews are the result of six months of evaluating all aspects of an online broker’s platform, including the user experience, the quality of trade executions, the products available on their platforms, costs and fees, security, the mobile experience and customer service. We established a rating scale based on our criteria, collecting over 3,000 data points that we weighed into our star scoring system.

In addition, every broker we surveyed was required to fill out a 320-point survey about all aspects of their platform that we used in our testing. Many of the online brokers we evaluated provided us with in-person demonstrations of their platforms at our offices.

Our team of industry experts, led by Theresa W. Carey, conducted our reviews and developed this best-in-industry methodology for ranking online investing platforms for users at all levels. Click here to read our full methodology.
