BREAKING DOWN Marriott School of Business

Located in Provo, Utah, the Marriott School of Business was established in 1891 as Commercial College and is a private school owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It has been known by many names throughout the decades, including Marriott School of Management, given in 1988 after J. Willard and Alice Marriott donated $15 million to the school. Its name was changed once again, to the Marriott School of Business, in 2017.

After surviving the Wall Street crash in 1929 and a decline in enrollment in the early 1940s due to World War II, the Marriott School of Management rebounded in 1945 as veterans returned from the war and went back to school. A master of business administration (MBA) program was added in 1961, followed by an executive MBA in 1983. The school now resides on the main campus of BYU in the N. Eldon Tanner Building.

In 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Marriott School of Business as 35th best among business schools in the United States.

Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University was founded in 1875, not too much earlier than its school of business. Today it educates approximately 33,000 students in almost 200 different majors. Unlike Marriott, the male/female student ratio is more equal, with 53% of students being male and 47% being female.
